The green dot in the top right corner of an Android phone might seem confusing, but don\u2019t worry. We\u2019re here to explain what it is and what it means.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like its competitor, the iPhone, Samsung has designed Android phones with several important alert icons. Some are more intuitive than others, but one that users often check is the green dot in the upper right corner. While they know it means something is activated, they don\u2019t always know which function it\u2019s associated with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung says it added this feature to give users more control over their privacy settings. Once you understand what it means, you\u2019ll know if you need to review your phone\u2019s privacy settings and permissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike iPhones, which use green and orange dots to distinguish between functions, Android phones use a single icon for all of them. If you see a green dot, it means that one of your open apps is using the device\u2019s microphone or camera. While this isn\u2019t a problem if you\u2019re actively using the camera, it can be concerning if you forget to grant camera or microphone access to an open app.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Samsung, you can quickly find out which app is using the camera or microphone in four easy steps. When the notification appears, an icon will show whether the alert is for the camera, the microphone, or both. This icon will then shrink to a dot in the upper right corner, next to other active indicators.<\/span><\/p>\n

For more information, swipe down the notification bar to open it and tap the dot to expand it. This will open a dialog box telling you what\u2019s being used (camera, microphone, or both) and which app is using it. If you grant the app access, you don\u2019t need to do anything else.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, if you don\u2019t recall granting access to a particular app, open its settings and disable those permissions. If the notification shows an app you no longer use, consider removing it from your device for peace of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n
