Non-stick pans:
Yes, many are labeled as dishwasher safe. And technically speaking, they don’t melt.
However, the coating deteriorates more quickly over time. High temperatures and cleaning agents shorten its lifespan.
If you want your pan to last a long time, avoid using the dishwasher – or at least the drying cycle.
Ceramic-coated cookware:
Here’s a curious fact – ceramic pans are not made entirely of ceramic. It’s just a coating.
And this coating cannot tolerate aggressive cleaning agents or acidic cleaners.
Hand washing helps to preserve the smooth surface for longer.
Acrylic and melamine tableware
is popular for good reason – it is lightweight, colorful and break-resistant.
However, dishwashers can cause the following:
Fading,
cracks,
deformations –
these things don’t happen overnight, which is why they are easily overlooked… until they become obvious.
Sentimental items (don’t take any risks)
Printed or hand-painted glassware
Do you know those measuring cups where the markings slowly disappear?
Yes – that’s the dishwasher.
Printed designs can fade after just a few washes. Hand-painted pieces? Even more delicate.
Fine porcelain with a metal rim –
gold accents and dishwashers don’t mix.
Cleaning agents and sprays can cause the metal coating to flake off. And once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Even if the rest of the artwork survives, it will no longer look the same as before.
Vintage porcelain and delicate crystal.
Some things aren’t about convenience, but about preservation.
Older pieces, especially repaired ones, can lose strength under heat and pressure. Crystal glass can become cloudy over time.
You could risk it… but why should you?
Everyday items that are easily forgotten:
Insulated mugs and cups.
These use a sealed air gap for insulation.
High temperatures can destroy this seal. Once water gets in, it’s all over.
Your mug, which used to keep coffee hot for 6 hours, will simply become a cup.
