Hungarian Dobos Torte Recipe (Dobos Torta)

The History of Dobos Torta

Dobos Torte was created in 1884 by Hungarian confectioner József C. Dobos. It debuted at the Hungarian National General Exhibition in Budapest in 1885, where it attracted widespread attention—including admiration from Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi).

At a time when buttercream cakes were uncommon, Dobos introduced a stable chocolate buttercream and protected the cake with a thin caramel layer to help preserve its freshness. His invention became famous throughout Europe and remains one of Hungary’s greatest culinary achievements.
