It was lunchtime. Mr. Thompson burst in, his face flushed red, and raised his finger to point at me. “Where’s your boss?” he shouted.
Mr. Caruso came out from behind the counter, still calm. “What can I do for you?” he asked.
“You’re spreading these pictures! This is slander! My wife and I are being harassed, and we’re ready to sue! Take this down immediately and retract what that lazy waitress said!”
Mr. Caruso folded his arms, a mocking smile playing on his lips. “Your face and name weren’t shown in the report. So you’re welcome to call the police. But that would be admitting that your family ate here and left with an $850 bill.” “Should I dial the number for you?”
Mr. Thompson hesitated and looked around as other guests pulled out their cell phones to film. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.

Ms. Thompson stepped closer and tugged at his sleeve. “Let’s pay and go,” she hissed through clenched teeth. Billing services
Having no other choice, Mr. Thompson reached into his pocket, pulled out his wallet, and slammed his credit card on the counter. “All right,” he muttered. “And add a tip.”
Mr. Caruso raised an eyebrow and grinned broadly. “How generous,” he said, scanning the card.
A low murmur filled the room. A few seconds later, Mr. Caruso handed Mr. Thompson the receipt. “Thank you very much for the payment. I’m sure you’ll sleep better tonight.”

As they turned to leave, Mr. Thompson glanced over his shoulder. “You’re going to tell people we paid, aren’t you?” he asked imploringly.
Mr. Caruso smiled again, this time with an unmistakable, mischievous smile. “We’ll see.”
The Thompsons hurried out the door. As soon as the door clicked shut behind them, applause erupted in the room. I stood there frozen. As amusing as it might have seemed, I wasn’t the type of person who appreciated such drama.
The restaurant was bustling with activity for the rest of the day. By the end of my shift, I was completely exhausted.

That evening, Mr. Caruso called me into his office. “Erica,” he said, gesturing for me to sit down, “I’ve been watching how you’ve handled everything, and I’m impressed. You’ve demonstrated patience, composure in stressful situations, and a level of professionalism that is rarely seen.”
“Thank you,” I said, still feeling a little dizzy.
“I think it’s time to make this official,” he continued. “I’d like to promote you to assistant branch manager. This comes with a raise, better working hours, and of course, more responsibility. What do you think?”
I stared at him wide-eyed. “Are you serious?” “Like a heart attack,” he replied with a smile. “You deserve it, even more than the Thompsons.”

“Wow!” I said, and my tiredness vanished. “Thank you so much!” Payment cards
We discussed my salary and some news. Later, Mr. Caruso sent me home. We continued the conversation the next day.
But as I left his office, I was overcome by the nagging feeling that we should have approached the matter differently.
“Mr. Caruso,” I said, turning around, “do you think we should have called the police immediately? After all, they ate and left.”
He smiled and leaned back in his chair. “Justice has been served, Erica. Look at all the support we’ve received. That’s all that matters. Some guests get away scot-free, and the restaurant never sees the money. Instead, you’ve helped us earn more.”
I nodded and let his words sink in. He might be right. The restaurant had turned a difficult situation into a triumph, and the good guys had won.
