My family did their best to visit me, but distance and daily obligations prevented them from being there often. My children lived in another city, and my friends had to fulfill their work and personal responsibilities. Although I understood the situation perfectly, I couldn’t help but feel that, when night fell, the silence became much more intense.
As the days passed, I began to get used to that routine until something unexpected happened. Every time the activity in the hallways slowed and the lights dimmed, a young woman appeared beside my bed. She made no noise when she entered, nor did she seem to be in any hurry to leave. She simply sat near me and remained there for several minutes.
At first, we barely exchanged glances. Her presence conveyed a tranquility that’s hard to describe. She didn’t ask about my health or try to start long conversations. Her mere presence was enough to make the room feel less empty.
As the nights went by, he began to speak to me. They were simple phrases, but full of serenity. He would repeat expressions like “Be strong” or “Everything will get better ,” messages that, although brief, ended up becoming a real boost to face my recovery with a different attitude.
Without realizing it, I began to look forward to that moment of the day. After the medical checkups and once the hospital had returned to its usual early morning calm, I would eagerly await his arrival. Those conversations became a space of emotional relief that helped me cope with the uncertainty inherent in any prolonged treatment.
