He never stayed too long. After chatting for a few minutes, he would get up as discreetly as he had arrived and disappear without a formal goodbye. However, each visit left behind a feeling of peace that lingered until the following morning.
I was finally discharged from the hospital. Regaining the freedom to go home was a tremendous joy, but before leaving, I felt the need to find out who that person was who had been with me for so many days. I wanted to thank them personally for the time they had dedicated to staying by my side when I needed them most.
When I asked the nurses , their response completely surprised me. None of them remembered a young woman matching my description. They checked the visitor logs and confirmed that no one had entered my room during the night shifts.
The staff also mentioned that no one at the hospital matched my description. Some professionals, very respectfully, suggested that perhaps my perception had been influenced by exhaustion, isolation, or even certain medications used during treatment. It was a reasonable explanation, though it didn’t completely convince me.
As the weeks passed, I tried to put that experience behind me and focus on getting back to my routine. Little by little, I resumed my usual activities and thought the episode would eventually become just a strange memory associated with my days in the hospital.
However, about a month and a half later something happened that reawakened all those questions.
While sorting through old boxes of family documents, I found an envelope full of old photographs that I hadn’t looked at for many years. Among those images was a portrait of a young woman whose expression immediately seemed familiar.
I studied the photograph intently for several minutes. There was something about her face, her gaze, and the serenity she conveyed that immediately brought back memories of those nights in the hospital. The resemblance to the visitor who had accompanied me was striking.
